Fermanagh is one of the few counties in Ireland without a public railway (Cavan, Tyrone and Donegal being the others) - a result of the anti rail bias of the Northern
Ireland Government in the 1950s and 1960s. This publication - ((Fermanaghs Railways|the second edition of work first published in 1998)) - is a look at the railways
that operated in the county and is written by two well known railway enthusiasts - one a Fermanagh native and the other of Fermanagh ancestry. This edition is in a
larger format than the first edition, which has allowed for less cropping of photographs in the book.
The map at the start of the book lays out the railways of the county very well as well as those of the surrounding counties that provided the connections into
Fermanagh. One of the authors states as fact something that the rest of us have believed - the Northern Irish Government forced adjacent landowners to buy back
the railway trackbeds of closed lines to prevent the lines reopening. The initial chapter is devoted to the personal reminiscences of the two authors of their travels
to/from/around Fermanagh. A brief history (of 13 pages) of Fermanagh's railways is given and the rest of the book is devoted to photographs. The format adopted is a
sensible one of taking each line and its features in sequence. Each station featured has a line diagram of the track layout included.
The second edition moves a number of sections from the history of Fermanagh's railways - one headed "The Last Day", another headed "After The Closures" and a
third headed "Could the Fermanagh Railways have survived" to a separate section at the end of the book. There is also a chapter on "Recent Developments".
